Maví
A fermented drink of Afro Caribbean origin made from the bark of the maví tree with sugar and spices such as anise and cinnamon. It starts sweet and finishes bitter, somewhere near root beer. Roadside stands and town festivals sell it, restaurants almost never do.
Example
At a mountain roadside stand the maví comes in a plastic cup and is paid for in cash.

Frequently asked questions
Is it alcoholic?
Barely. The fermentation is short, so it is treated and sold as a soft drink.
What does it taste like?
Sweet up front and bitter at the finish, with spice. It recalls sarsaparilla root more than fruit.
