Is Arecibo worth visiting?

Yes, for the karst country: sinkhole caves, an underground river, sea cliffs and a working science center. One clarification first: the giant Arecibo telescope collapsed on December 1, 2020. It is gone, and any guide selling it as an attraction is out of date.

What to see

Cueva Ventana: a guided walk to a cliff cave that frames the Rio Grande de Arecibo valley. Tours from $20 (estimated), about 1.5 hours.
Cavernas del Rio Camuy: one of the largest cave systems in the Caribbean, with a trolley down into Cueva Clara. Entry from $18 (estimated), 2-3 hours. The park has closed intermittently in recent years, call 787-898-3100 before driving out.
Arecibo C3: the science and education center at the old observatory site. The telescope itself is gone, but C3 runs ticketed tours of the science and visitor center and Saturday STEM programs open to the public since April 2026 (areciboc3.org).
Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park: a family park built around the 1898 lighthouse. Entry from $12 (estimated), about 1 hour.
Cueva del Indio: sea cliffs and Taino petroglyphs a short drive east. Access fee from $5 (estimated), about 1 hour. Wear real shoes, the rock is sharp.

2-day itinerary

Day 1: Cueva Ventana in the morning (1.5 hours), lunch in town, Cueva del Indio in the afternoon (1 hour), sunset at the lighthouse park.
Day 2: Cavernas del Rio Camuy in the morning (2-3 hours, call first) or an Arecibo C3 tour if the caverns are closed. Afternoon excursion to Playa Jobos in Isabela, 30-40 minutes west, for a beach finish.

Getting around

Public transport is limited and the sights are spread out. A rental car from $35 per day (estimated) is the practical choice. Distances are short, nothing above is more than 45 minutes from the city.

Budget: from $60 per day (estimated), guesthouses and local eateries.
Mid-range: from $110 per day (estimated), hotel plus two paid attractions.
Comfortable: from $200 per day (estimated), the best rooms plus private tours.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not plan around the old radio telescope, it collapsed in 2020 and the dish no longer exists. Do not drive to the Camuy caverns without calling first. And keep cash on hand, card acceptance is thin outside the city center.
