Bioluminescent Bays

Are the bioluminescent bays worth visiting?

Yes. Puerto Rico has three bays where dinoflagellates light the water at night, and each works differently: one for brightness, one for convenience, one for swimming.

The three bays

• Mosquito Bay (Vieques): the brightest bioluminescent bay on record. Night kayak or electric boat tours, 2-3 hours, from $55 (estimated). Swimming is prohibited to protect the ecosystem. Requires staying on Vieques or timing the ferry carefully.
• Laguna Grande (Fajardo): the easiest bay from San Juan, about an hour by car. Night kayak tours through the mangrove channel, 1-2 hours, from $50 (estimated). Evening departures only, there are no morning bio tours anywhere, the glow needs darkness.
• La Parguera (Lajas): the southwest bay and the only one where swimming is allowed. Boat tours with a swim stop, from $30 (estimated). Farthest from San Juan, about 2.5 hours, pairs well with a west coast trip.

When to go

3-day itinerary

1. Day 1: Arrive in Fajardo. Evening kayak tour of Laguna Grande (departures start after sunset). Dinner at Las Croabas afterward.
2. Day 2: Ferry from Ceiba to Vieques, the terminal moved from Fajardo in 2018. Afternoon on the beaches. Night tour in Mosquito Bay.
3. Day 3: Return by ferry. If you have two more days, drive southwest and add La Parguera for the swim-allowed version.

Getting around

A rental car from $35 per day (estimated) is the practical way to link Fajardo, the Ceiba terminal and La Parguera. Taxis for short trips run from $15 (estimated). On Vieques, rent locally or use taxis.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not book near a full moon, brightness drowns the effect. Do not plan to swim in Mosquito Bay, it is prohibited, La Parguera is the bay for that. Rinse off sunscreen and repellent before any swim stop, the microorganisms are sensitive. And book tours in advance, the good dates fill first.
