What it is
Three Kings Day is an official holiday in Puerto Rico, and Juana Díaz has celebrated it since 1884 without missing a single year. The Reyes of Juana Díaz arrive on horseback and lead a parade through town handing out gifts and sweets, drawing more than 25,000 people to the plaza of a small municipality. It is the oldest religious and cultural celebration on the island.
What to expect
On the eve, the night of the 5th, children leave grass in a box under the bed for the camels. On the 6th the town wakes up with mass, the promesa de Reyes and a trulla (a roving street party with music), and the plaza fills early. The Reyes also travel by caravan through other municipalities in the days before, so if you cannot make the 6th you may still run into them.
Getting there
Juana Díaz is about 100 kilometers from San Juan on the PR-52 freeway, a little over an hour and a half by car. The practical move is to sleep in Ponce, 20 minutes away, and get in early because the town center closes to traffic. There is no useful public transport from San Juan for this date.
