Is El Yunque worth visiting?

Yes. It is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system, and its short trails, towers and waterfalls fit into a single day from San Juan.

Before you go: closures and reservations

The La Mina Trail and La Mina Falls remain closed (fs.usda.gov trail status, checked August 2026). The falls drop about 35 feet, and the trail has been shut since Hurricane Maria in 2017. Entry to the PR-191 corridor is free and no reservation was required as of August 2026, but the policy has changed several times since 2021, so confirm on fs.usda.gov or recreation.gov the week you travel.

La Coca Falls: an 85-foot cascade right beside PR-191, visible from the road. Free.
Yokahu Observation Tower: coast-to-peak views after a short spiral climb. Free.

Mount Britton Tower: a 45 to 60 minute uphill walk into the cloud forest. Free.
El Yunque Peak: the summit trail takes 4-5 hours round trip. Free.

Day trip itinerary

El Yunque works best as a day trip, not a multi-day base.

Morning: enter at 8 AM, stop at La Coca Falls, climb the Yokahu Tower.
Midday: hike to Juan Diego Falls or Mount Britton Tower.
Afternoon: drive 15 minutes down to Luquillo Beach and eat at the food kiosks.

If you stay a second day, do the El Yunque Peak trail with an early start.

Mistakes to avoid

Timing hikes late. Finish before sunset, trails are unlit and slick.
