Coquito

A Christmas drink of coconut milk, condensed milk, spices and rum, served very cold in small glasses. It is the local answer to eggnog, though the classic recipe contains no egg. Every family guards its own version and in December bottles get given as gifts.

Example

In December someone offers you coquito on your first visit to any house, and declining takes more explaining than accepting.

Frequently asked questions

Does it contain egg like eggnog?
The classic recipe does not. There are yolk versions called coquito de yema, but they are not the standard.
Can I buy it bottled?
Yes, local brands appear in supermarkets and liquor stores, mostly from November to January. The homemade version is better and is not sold in shops.
