Manglar

A coastal forest of trees that grow with their roots in salt water, forming narrow channels and fish nurseries. In Puerto Rico you paddle through them by kayak, above all in Fajardo, La Parguera and the Condado lagoon. They are the first barrier against hurricane surge, which is why their condition matters beyond scenery.

Example

The mangrove channel that leads to the Fajardo bio bay is paddled in single file, because two kayaks do not fit side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Are there mosquitoes?
Yes, especially at dusk. Repellent and long sleeves are standard on evening trips.
Do I need paddling experience?
No. Mangrove tours go out with a guide and tandem kayaks, and the channel is sheltered water with no swell.
