Bahía bioluminiscente

An enclosed bay where the water lights up blue green when disturbed, thanks to a dense population of light emitting microorganisms. Puerto Rico has three of them, in Vieques, Fajardo and Lajas, which is rare anywhere in the world. You visit at night by kayak or electric boat, and the glow depends above all on the moon phase.

Example

Booking the trip around a new moon changes the outcome entirely. Under a full moon the water still glows, but you can barely see it.

What is the best night to go?
Nights with no moon or a thin crescent. A full moon washes out the glow.
Can I swim in it?
Not in Vieques or Fajardo, where swimming is banned to protect the ecosystem. La Parguera does allow it.
