Roberto Clemente Memorial at Isla Verde Beach: Why His Name Is Everywhere in Puerto Rico

The beach at Isla Verde runs hard against the airport fence, and the water it faces is the same water where a plane went down on the night of December 31, 1972. Roberto Clemente was aboard a DC-7 that had just left the Isla Verde airport in Carolina when the number two engine failed, at about 21:20. The aircraft went into the sea roughly a mile from the coast, near Piñones. Planes still drop low over that shoreline on approach, close enough that the shadow crosses the sand before the sound arrives. Isla Verde is the most urban beach on the island, and the memorial to Clemente stands in front of its water, facing the stretch where the flight ended.

Why the name is on so much of Puerto Rico

Clemente was not on a routine flight. He was traveling with the fourth relief flight of aid to Nicaragua after the earthquake of December 23, 1972, and he had gone along because reports had reached him that the military was taking the supplies. The engine that failed had been damaged in an earlier incident that same month and had not been inspected. Neither the cargo nor the plane reached Nicaragua. In 1973 he entered the Baseball Hall of Fame. The engine failure, the unreviewed damage, the undelivered supplies: those details are why the story did not fade with the newspaper coverage. Putting a name on a school, an avenue or a stadium keeps a person in daily use, and Puerto Rico has done that with Clemente, whose last trip was not a game.

The memorial is a place to stand for a few minutes rather than a site to tour. Isla Verde beach is public and open daily, and the memorial is easiest to reach on foot from the hotel strip along the shore. Early morning gives flat light and open sand, late afternoon brings people and the whine of the airport behind you. Sunset is the busiest hour on this sand, and before 8 a.m. the beach belongs to walkers and the plane noise is sparse.
