What to do when October rain ruins the beach day
October sits deep in Puerto Rico's rainy season, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30. A washed-out beach morning in San Juan or Isla Verde is not a lost day if you are willing to move indoors and, ideally, drive south. Women's basketball is the kind of evening locals go to and visitors almost never think about. The crowd is local, the games fit into a normal night, and you get a few hours in a part of the island that is not built around resorts.
Last Saturday was a good night for it. The Leonas of Ponce needed overtime to win, and the Monarcas of Juana Díaz picked up a third consecutive victory, according to the San Juan Daily Star. Two games, one night, both in the south.
How to catch a game in Ponce
The Leonas play in Ponce, which makes a Saturday game easy to bolt onto a day in the historic center around Plaza Las Delicias. Walk the plaza in the afternoon, eat early, then head to the arena.
Two warnings. Games run long. The Ponce win went to overtime, so do not book a 9 PM dinner reservation on a game night. And schedules live with the league and the teams rather than on the big US ticketing sites, so confirm the date on the team's own official channel before you drive across the island. If the game falls through, Ponce fills a full day on its own, and our guide to the city covers where to start.
Why Juana Díaz deserves the extra 20 minutes
Juana Díaz sits just east of Ponce, close enough that a Monarcas home game is a realistic add-on if you are already sleeping in the south. The team is the story of the young season: five losses to open, then three wins in a row.
In the latest one, Imani McGee finished with 13 points, 22 rebounds, four assists and six blocks. Twenty-two rebounds in a single game tells you she owned the paint, and it is the sort of stat line you remember longer than another afternoon on a crowded beach.
One practical note. Juana Díaz is a small town and this is a night event, so plan to sleep nearby rather than drive back to San Juan afterwards.
Should you base in San Juan or in Ponce?
If basketball is why you are heading south, sleep in Ponce. The drive from San Juan to Ponce is roughly 1.5 hours by car on Route 52 when traffic cooperates, and the same drive after an overtime game that ends near 10 PM is a different experience entirely.
Beach-focused travelers often stay in Isla Verde or Condado and day-trip south. That works, but you are adding three hours of driving to a night out. Route 52 is a toll road. Rental cars in Puerto Rico normally carry a toll pass, but how it gets billed varies by company, so ask at the counter before you leave San Juan.
Mark one date for late September: Roberto Clemente Walker Day
Basketball is not the only reason sports fans drive this highway. On Sept. 30, Puerto Rico marks Roberto Clemente Walker Day, the anniversary of his 3,000th hit. This year, students from the Eugenio María de Hostos School in Cayey commemorated the date and were recognized by Cayey Mayor Rolando Ortiz Velázquez.
Cayey sits on the main route between San Juan and Ponce, so a late-September drive south puts you in the right place at the right time. The date does not move, which makes it easy to build a trip around.
One last thing to book before you fly
A rainy-night basketball plan only helps if you actually land. Hurricane season runs to Nov. 30, so book hotel rates that can be cancelled and read your airline's change policy before you pay. Travel insurance is worth comparing early, since most policies treat a storm differently once it has been named.
And keep one indoor backup for every day of a south-coast trip, not one for the whole week. Rain in Puerto Rico usually arrives in bursts, so a game at night and a long lunch under a roof can rescue a day that looked finished at 10 AM.
