Why San Juan flights and rental cars will be tighter this winter
San Juan's airport traffic rebounded in September, with more than 810,000 passengers passing through, according to Caribbean Journal. That is roughly 27,000 people a day through one terminal complex. Airlines commit to winter schedules months ahead, so a strong September usually means fewer unsold seats on December and January flights.
Book the flight first, then the rental car in the same sitting. Cars are the first thing to run short on the island in high season.
If you are basing yourself in Old San Juan or Isla Verde, you probably do not need a car for the whole trip. Reserve one for the days you actually plan to leave the metro area, and collect it when you land, because hoping to find a car in late December is not a plan.
One more option worth checking: Aguadilla and Ponce see a fraction of the airport traffic San Juan handles. A fare into either can work out, especially if your trip leans west or south, but confirm car availability before you commit, because the schedules there are thinner.
What to book before you fly
Three things are worth locking in now.
Flights. Florida carries the most capacity to San Juan, so Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando usually offer the widest choice and the lowest fares. For December, expect Florida round trips to land somewhere around 200-450 USD once the cheap seats go. If your dates are fixed, book by mid-October.
A car for the days you actually need one. Not necessarily the full week if you are staying in the metro area.
Night tours. The bioluminescent bays at Fajardo and on Vieques take a limited number of kayaks and boats each night, and moonlight washes out the glow. Aim for nights around the new moon and book weeks ahead. Our bioluminescent bays guide explains how the different bays compare.
If the east side is on your list, El Yunque fills early at weekends. Arriving by 8 AM usually means easier parking and trails that have not turned muddy yet.
Is the drought still a problem for your trip?
It depends on where you sleep.
El Nuevo Día reported that the most intense drought categories shrank after moderate, scattered rain, but 64.22% of Puerto Rico is still under some degree of dryness. That is a large share of the island. It is a reason to ask one question, not to cancel anything.
Ask your hotel whether it stores water on site and how long that supply lasts. A large resort and a four-room guesthouse are in very different positions, and the answer comes back in one email. If you are heading to Vieques or Culebra, ask before you pay a deposit. If the answer is vague and you are staying somewhere small or rural, keep a few litres of drinking water in your room and refill when you can.
The rain in that report was moderate and scattered rather than soaking, so do not read it as the drought being over. Pack a light rain shell either way. Afternoon showers in October are normal, and the north and east coasts, El Yunque included, collect far more of them than Ponce or the south-west.
How early should you get to San Juan airport?
With more than 810,000 passengers a month, the queues are real. Target two and a half hours before a mainland departure. Move that to three hours on a holiday weekend, or if you are dropping a rental car and checking bags.
Checked luggage on mainland flights usually goes through an agricultural screening before loading, and fruit, plants and soil are what slow people down. Eat the mango before security, not after.
Driving in on the same day is where people get caught. Rincón is usually 2.5-3 hours from the airport, and Ponce is roughly 1.5-2 hours via the toll road. For a 7 AM departure that maths does not work. Stay near San Juan the night before and drive out later.
Do you need to change your plans?
No. Neither report points to attractions closing or services being cut. The island is inside hurricane season until 30 November, which is normal for a trip planned in October and not a reason to postpone.
What actually changes is your booking calendar and one email to your hotel. Book winter flights and cars early, ask about water storage at small properties, and keep your first or last night close to the airport if you have an early departure. That is the whole checklist.
