Mundillo

Bobbin lace woven by hand over a cylindrical cushion, inherited from Spain and preserved above all in Moca, in the northwest, known as the capital of mundillo. It appears on table linen, collars, fans and trousseaus. A medium piece takes many hours of work and the price says so.

Example

At the museum in Moca you can watch it being woven, and that is where you understand why a small doily does not cost ten dollars.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I buy the real thing?
In Moca and at craft fairs with accredited artisans. If the price feels like a market stall, it is probably machine lace.
Can I watch it being made?
Yes. Moca has a dedicated museum and workshops where weaving happens in front of visitors, especially during festival dates.
