Getting around

Autopistas principales

The island's fast network rests on two toll corridors: one running west from San Juan along the north coast and one crossing the mountains to Ponce and the south. They are what puts almost any point on the island within two or three hours of the capital. All of them run on electronic tolling, with no cash lanes.

Example

Driving to Ponce on the highway takes a bit over ninety minutes, and going over the mountains can take twice that or more.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tour the island without highways?
Yes, on secondary roads and the Panoramic Route, and it is far prettier and far slower.
Are there service areas?
Gas stations and fast food sit at the exits more than on the road itself, so fill up when leaving a larger town.
