Estatus de territorio
Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, with its own government and US citizenship for those born there since 1917. For a traveler that means the dollar as currency, a domestic flight from the rest of the United States and the same visa rules as the mainland for anyone arriving from abroad. It is also the island's central political debate, with support for statehood, for the current status and for independence.

A European visitor needs the same United States entry authorization as for a flight to Miami, even though the destination is in the Caribbean.
