What it is
Holy Week in Puerto Rico blends the Spanish Catholic heritage with the local habit of spending the whole week at the beach. Good Friday is an official holiday and shops and offices close. In Viejo San Juan the Tenebrae procession moves through the streets beside the cathedral with the cross and an image of Mary draped in mourning.
What to expect
Two Puerto Ricos at once. The religious one, with processions from Palm Sunday, the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday and the Way of the Cross on Friday, and the vacation one, with beaches and public balnearios packed with families camped out since Wednesday. It is the week with the highest hotel occupancy of the year along with Christmas, so book well ahead.
Getting there
For the processions in the old city, any place to stay in Viejo San Juan or Condado works and you go on foot or by short taxi. If the plan is the beach, expect serious traffic toward Luquillo, Piñones and the west coast on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Renting a car that week also means booking in advance.
