What it is
The San Blas in Coamo is the oldest and hardest race in Puerto Rico, a half marathon of 21 kilometers over rolling hills that has reached 65 editions and hands out more than 50,000 dollars in prizes. It is run by the Fraternidad Delta Phi Delta and fills the whole town, with spectators along the entire route. The 65th edition is on Sunday, March 7, 2027, with 5,000 spots and a start at 6:30 in the morning.
What to expect
The course climbs and drops constantly under Caribbean heat, which is why it draws elite African and Latin American runners alongside the 5,000 registered participants. For anyone not running, it is a two day town celebration with music and kiosks around the plaza. The wheelchair start is at 6:00 and everyone else goes at 6:30.
Getting there
Coamo is a little over an hour from San Juan on the PR-52. On race day the streets of the town center close very early, so you either drive in at night or park on the outskirts. Nearby are the Baños de Coamo, the historic hot springs, which are the logical plan for afterward.
