What it is

La danza is the genre Ponce gave to Puerto Rico, and many call it the classical music of the island, close to the waltz in rhythm and cadence. The Fiesta Nacional de la Danza was created by Law 20 of April 26, 1972, which tasked the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña with organizing it every year during the week of the birthday of Juan Morel Campos, the most prolific composer of the genre. It runs for seven days of concerts and dancing in Ponce in mid May.

What to expect

Danza concerts at Teatro La Perla and in Plaza Las Delicias, a composition contest, period balls in costume and activities at the Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña. It is a festival for local audiences more than for tourists, which is why it feels authentic and free of lines. It pairs well with the historic center of Ponce, the finest architectural ensemble on the island after Viejo San Juan.

Getting there

Ponce is an hour and a half from San Juan on the PR-52 and the whole historic center is walkable from Plaza Las Delicias. There is public parking near the plaza and hotels right in the old town. The Fiesta de la Danza does not overwhelm the town the way carnival does, so you can go and come back the same day.
