What it is
Jayuya sits in the Taíno heart of the island, and its festival has spent more than fifty editions honoring that heritage. It takes place in the public plaza around November 19, Puerto Rico Discovery Day, with three days of music, crafts and food. Admission is free and it is organized by the Centro Cultural Jayuyano.
What to expect
The crowning of the india of the festival, areyto and ceremonial dances, artisans working stone and clay with Taíno motifs, and mountain food. Nearby are La Piedra Escrita, covered in Taíno petroglyphs, and the Museo El Cemí, so the festival fits inside a full day indigenous route. It is one of the few places where Taíno heritage is told from the territory itself.
Getting there
Jayuya is in the central mountain range, about two hours from San Juan on the PR-52 and mountain roads. You can only get there by car, and it is best done in daylight because the curves are tight and there is little lighting. The town is small and during the festival you park on the outskirts.
