Puerto Rico's weekend forecast calls for showers, thunderstorms and heat, with possible minor flooding in the interior and the west, according to El Nuevo Dia. That is a weekend to plan around, not a reason to cancel. Almost everything you came for still fits if you move it to the morning.
What the weekend forecast means for your itinerary
The National Weather Service is expecting showers, thunderstorms and hot conditions, and it flagged the possibility of minor flooding inland and on the west side of the island (El Nuevo Dia). Nothing in that forecast closes beaches, museums or the airport.
October sits in the back half of Puerto Rico's wet season, and rain here builds through the afternoon before clearing at night. The same day can feel like two different islands. Dry roads and open sky at 8 AM. Water running down the gutters by 3 PM.
So flip the order of your days. Put the thing you flew here for in the first half of the day and keep 2 PM to 6 PM for something under a roof. On a three-day trip, that single change protects more of your plans than rebooking anything.
Do El Yunque and the beach before lunch
El Yunque is the plan an afternoon storm ruins fastest. Trails turn slick, the road up through the forest slows to a crawl, and the views disappear into cloud. If you want the main recreation area, expect to need a timed reservation, and sort that out before you fly rather than the night before.
Beach mornings work the same way. Be on the sand by 9 AM and back under cover by 1 PM. Isla Verde and the Fajardo area both suit an early swim. Heat is the other half of this forecast, so figure on roughly 2 liters of water per person for a half day outside, and reapply sunscreen more often than feels necessary.
Nights tend to be clearer than afternoons. El Nuevo Dia and Primera Hora both reported a bright meteor over the island at 1:48 a.m. on Saturday, with a green trail and a smoke line that stayed visible even through cloud (El Nuevo Dia, Primera Hora). If you are up late, look up.
Driving west or into the mountains when it rains
The flooding the weather service flagged is described as minor, and it concentrates in the interior and the west (El Nuevo Dia). Those are the same two areas with the best drives, the mountain roads of the Cordillera and the run out to Rincón and the west coast.
Two rules. Never drive through water covering the road, because you cannot judge the depth from the driver's seat and rivers here rise fast after heavy rain. And add slack to the day. A drive that takes 90 minutes in dry weather can take two and a half hours in a downpour.
If you are based in the south and heading into the mountains around Ponce, leave earlier than planned and check the radar before you commit.
Flights, airport timing and the new Southwest route
Thunderstorms can put flights in and out of San Juan behind schedule, and a delay on the last departure of the day usually costs you a hotel night you did not budget for. Book the earliest flight you can tolerate, and check your airline's app before you head to the airport.
Separately, Primera Hora reports that Southwest will add a new route in Puerto Rico (Primera Hora). Route details and start dates move around, so check the airline's own site before you build a trip around the announcement.
Where to spend a washed-out afternoon
San Juan is the easy answer. In the historic district, one ticket covers both big forts and stays valid for 24 hours, usually around 10 USD. The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in Santurce is the other reliable indoor stop.
If you have already booked a night kayak trip to one of the bioluminescent bays, keep it. Those tours leave after dark, so they dodge the afternoon pattern. Ask about the operator's rain policy when you book rather than when the sky turns grey.
For a day trip to Culebra or Vieques, make the call on the morning of travel using the marine forecast instead of canceling a week out.
